💧Hydration vs. Nutrition: how to choose for textured hair
Partager
You often hear about hydrating or nourishing your hair, but you don't really know what that means?
These two steps are essential in a hair care routine, but they do not do the same thing.
Here is how to properly distinguish between them, and more importantly, how to know what your hair really needs.
🌀 1. What is hydration?
Hydration means providing water to the hair fiber.
It is what makes hair supple, soft, and elastic.
We hydrate with:
-
water-based leave-ins
-
aloe vera gel
-
homemade hydrating sprays
-
products with humectants (vegetable glycerin, honey, etc.)
📌 Signs that you are lacking hydration:
-
dry, brittle hair
-
curls that do not hold
-
straw-like texture
🌰 2. What is nutrition?
Nutrition means providing lipids (fats) to the hair: oils, butters, thick creams.
It helps to seal in hydration, repair the fiber, and reinforce protection.
We nourish with:
-
oil baths
-
rich masks (shea, avocado, coconut...)
-
nourishing serums or creams
📌 Signs that you are lacking nutrition:
-
dull hair
-
lack of shine
-
split ends or hair that "scratches" when rubbed
🔄 3. Both are complementary
To keep your hair healthy, you must hydrate + nourish.
One without the other is not enough!
💡 Tip: apply a hydrating leave-in (like the one coming soon from Ikala 💧)
followed by a light oil to seal in the hydration. This is the LOC or LCO method.
